Aluminium foam component developed for Audi A2

Audi A2 (1999 - 2005) is a small aluminium based vehicle. Its structure made from classic aluminium needed to increase stiffeness of side rail by a foamed aluminium component.

At our institute, a stiffener component for the side rail of car body was developed and its production begun at our partner Neuman Alufoam GmbH, Marktl in Austria. Unfortunately in a high stage of Audi A2 mass production preparation, the vehicle was redesigned because of problems not related to our component; but our component was not necessary more. Nevertheless, our stiffener was the first automobile aluminium foam component prepared for mass production, in the world.
