2018 - The children once again became real scientists for one day

In 2018, the Find In Your Scientist project continued with other actions for primary school pupils.

According to the director of the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics SAS, Ing. Karol Iždinský, CSc., the project is a great way to show science to young pupils. "The Slovak society has no rich mineral wealth, but it has the potential of young, skilled, and talented people with whom it has to work and support them. It is necessary to show them what are possibilities for their future profession and one of the alternatives or choices of the future profession is also science that promotes natural human education. Our greatest wealth is our reason, on which we, as a society, should build on, and that is why the project Find a Scientist in Yourself was created within the framework of four SAS institutes.

Sixth-grade students visited the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics SAS, where they were introduced to the theory of evolution and development of materials. This was followed by practical demonstrations of material production by casting. Thanks to this schoolchildren understood how metal materials are getting their final shape. In well-equipped laboratories, they had become familiar with 3-D tomography, where they had to hit the principle of imaging and the essence of why the material of a different colour has a different density. The sixth-grade students also had the opportunity to see, and especially to find out on their own, how the microscope works. They learned to prepare a sample for observation and to determine the chemical composition of the metallic materials.
