Dr. JURAJ LAPIN, HOLDER OF THE AUREL STODOLA DISTINCTION OF SAV

Dr. Juraj Lapin, head of the Division of Properties of Materials and Structures of the Institute of Materials and Mechanics of Machines of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, 14.7 from the hand of vice-chairman of the SAS for the 1. Department of Sciences Martin Venhart has taken over by the Aurel Stodola honorary distinction of the SAS.
 
In a pleasant, almost "family" atmosphere, the festive laudácio was performed by a long-term collaborator of Juraj Lapin, a member of the SAS Presidium Dr. František Simančík. "Ing. Juraj Lapin, DrSc., has largely contributed to the development of the scientific field of solidification processes of complex metallic, especially intermetallic alloys, and the evaluation of mechanical properties of materials at high temperatures. He is one of the internationally recognized experts, with an above-average response to published original scientific results, "he said.

F. Simančík repeatedly praised the contribution of J. Lapin to the work of the institute. "He is one of the key researchers of the IMMS, who have been shaping its focus for a long time and to a significant extent participate in the high quality of constitutional basic research. As a member of the Learned Society of the SAS and a former vice-president of the SAS, he belongs to the respected and opinion-forming scientists of the SAS, in which he works all his professional life. Therefore, on the occasion of his jubilee - on the occasion of his 60th birthday (February 9, 1960), the SAS Presidium decided to award him the honorary distinction of the SAS Aurel Stodola for merits in technical sciences".
 
Since graduating from university, Ing. Juraj Lapin, DrSc., has been working continuously at the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He began in 1984 with a two-year study stay, later continuing his postgraduate studies as an independent researcher leading the Department of Intermetallic Phases (since 1995), and later the Division of Properties of Materials and Structures (from 2001 until today). In 2009-2017 he was a member of the SAS Presidium, of which in 2009-2015, he was the Vice-Chairman for the 1st Department of Sciences. Since 2015, he has been the head of the Center for Applied Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, focused on new materials and technologies. He is a member of the SAS Society. In the years 2014 - 2018, he was a member of the APVV Council for Technical Sciences. He is currently the National Delegate for Horizon 2020 - Space.

From the beginning (from university studies), he focused professionally on the research of solidification processes of complex metal alloys and their influence on the microstructure and subsequently on selected mechanical properties of components made of them. First, in the group of Dr. Kováčová devoted himself to the process of directed crystallization of nickel alloys for the needs of aircraft engine blades, which were one of the main research topics of the IMMS, later after a long stay at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium in collaboration with prof. F. Delanney created his team focused on complex intermetallic alloys based on nickel, titanium, or iron. At ÚMMS, he managed to build a top scientific team (according to the evaluation of the independent agency ARRA in 2011) focused on solidification processes of complex intermetallic alloys, which aim to significantly improve their mechanical properties at high temperatures as well as increase their corrosion (oxidation) resistance. In 2013, he received the Award of the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic in the category of Scientific and Technical Team of the Year.

Dr. Juraj Lapin educated five doctoral students, three of whom are now employees of ÚMMS.
