Aluminium foam stiffened Ferrari Modena 360

It was quite bizzare situation. We had only about 3 weeks at Christmas time for development and prototype production of additional stiffening component for side rail of Ferrari Modena 360 spider. Car development is complex and expensive process, so we had to meet the deadline for crash tests of alternative stiffening solutions, at Ferrari.

We met the deadline and the tests showed that our solution based on aluminium foam was optimal not only from viewpoint of mechanical properties but also from viewpoint of cost. We developed and manufactured production equipment and first low series production begun in our institute.

The mass production of 6 000 pieces per year was performed at our partner, the Austrian company Alulight GmbH, Ranshofen. This was the first mass production of aluminium foam component in the world.
